Materials

Below you’ll find my recommendation for drawing and painting supplies for my courses

1.   Arches Watercolor paper BRIGHT WHITE / COLD PRESSED /ROUGH  140/300 gm2 *This paper is REQUIRED* You need a heavier "tooth" on the paper that will hold the charcoal in its grooves yet  it is still smooth enough to keep the dust looking unified on the paper. No mountain divits on this paper.

2. WILLOW  CHARCOAL :  Soft, Medium, Hard 1 box of each  ( this is in substitute of the Nirtam, getting this means you don't need item # 7)

3.  Mi Teintes  paper by Strathmore,  buy 1 Almond/ 1 White .   I like this paper because It is a heavier weight and they make several color choices.

The question of which paper to use is all about "choosing a surface to work on". And this should be  all about experimenting. Having several pieces of paper and training yourself to work on different surfaces is good for figuring out what looks best and feels best to YOU. We will go over this more.

4.  Smooth Drawing paper , Strathmore 400 series

This paper is lightly tinted, Strathmore 400 series is a good place to start. Its nothing fancy and still very suitable for making drawings worth keeping. (Thats right everyone, you are keeping a stock of supplies so there is no more running to the store to buy 1 sheet of paper or using computer paper to draw on. Having these pads will be great for future use.

5. Pencils , 4H,2H,H,HB,B,2B,4B

(You can pick them out separately)

6. Nitram Charcoal , not required,  Only available by order! After using willow charcoal you can order item Nitram Charcoal if you want to progress into this medium, 2 packs of each Hardness - B , HB , H   are the varying hardnesses

 BUY online HERE

7. KNEADED ERASERS at least 1

These erases are just fine for the job. There are many different brands. Smoother and not too sticky work the best. Too sticky will ruin your paper and leave an oil mark.

9. SHARPENER

We will not be using old fashion sharpeners. For time and skill building we will be using hand made sharpeners.

Make your own and bring it. Or you can email me and purchase one from me.

1 piece of sand paper glued to a hard surface is al your need.

Below is a picture of how we will use them. They can be sharpened different ways.

Note :  We will be standing at Easels and this means you will need a drawing board for your paper at the easel ( this will be provided by the Townsend Atelier, but bringing your own board is always nice) .
